Big Five Featured Athletes of the Month:
Here are the profiles of some of our athletes:
Katie Anthony – Starkville, Mississippi. Katie has completed marathons and the revered 56k Two Oceans Ultra in South Africa so she knows what it takes to work hard in endurance event. She was training with us this year leading up to half Iron distance at Ryanman in her home state of Mississippi in October 2016
Andre Roy- Ottawa, Ontario. Andre has been to every one of the group training sessions – save one – since Big Five hit the ground running in early April. He has progressed in his swimming, cycling and running while his aerobic fitness has improved steadily. More importantly, Andre seems to be really enjoying himself at the group training sessions without the pressure of competing this year. Thanks Andre for your consistency and we hope you continue to be a role model for everybody at Big Five
Emilie Stanton-Bursey – Ottawa, Ontario. Our youngest Big Five member, at 15 years old, Emilie Stanton-Bursey has been a mainstay in our coached clubs and definitely brings a lot of energy to our group. She is always working hard and has progressed well from a rider who was afraid to take her hands off her bike handles to a triathlete on a time trial bike barking out “hole” & “clear” like she has been doing it for years! She came first in her age group at the local triathlon. We hope there will be many more victories to come!
Julia Borgan – Ottawa, Ontario. Julia, a mainstay with our training program since April 2016, made her dreams come true at Ironman Mont Tremblant! Such a spectacular job she did managing a busy career, young children, and all the lonely training that is involved with Ironman – although Big Five was there along the way with Coach Liz rides to assist, we know that Julia had to dig deep on a few long rides where it tested her to her limits and she came out all the better! Welcome to the Ironman Aristocracy Julia!
Michelle Nadler – Toronto, Ontario. Michelle is a busy Doctor and athlete who has about 36 hours in her day! It amazes and tires me out to see how some people can balance all these competing interests and Michelle is definitely one who likes to fill her time. In September 2016, Michelle competed at the Provincial Long course Championships 1/2 iron distance in Welland/Niagara after a solid summer of work and training. Then.. she ran the Toronto Marathon in October! So, of course, Ironman would be a natural extension for somebody like Michelle, Right?! Yep, signed up for Ironman Mont Tremblant next summer 2017!!
Laura Murray- Mississauga, Ontario. While juggling her manager job and a Pampered Chef business, and going through a full kitchen renovation, Laura still managed to train and race Ironman 70.3 Timberman, Ride for a Cure, a couple of triathlons in the Toronto area and then she finished Ironman Maryland in 2016! That is pretty impressive stuff. We congratulate her on this achievements and thanking for allowing Big Five to coach you on your Ironman journey!
Tamara Candiracci – Rome, Italy.
Tamara resides in Rome, Italy. She recently became a certified Movement Medicine Specialist, is also a yoga teacher, on top of her day job as a nurse with Medecins sans Frontier. In the past month Tamara has run her first two 10k run races! Tamara has been a joy to coach, always pushing herself to the next level in her training. She is eyeing up a half marathon this spring and, ultimately, she will finish her first marathon in 2018. Big Five loves to see these long term goals and will be there in Italy – along with several of the Italian contingent – to support Tamara on her journey. Congratulations Tamara for your recent successes and we look forward to more.
